HIMA H7018 is a system expansion rack (also known as an expansion base or expansion backplane) designed by Germany-based HIMA for its classic H41q/H51q safety control systems. This module is specifically used to expand the I/O capacity of HIMA safety control systems and serves as a key infrastructure component for building medium-to-large-sized Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD).

    Product Parameters

    • Product Model: H7018
    • Manufacturer: HIMA
    • Product Type: System Expansion Rack/Expansion Backplane (for H41q/H51q systems)
    • Number of Module Slots: 8
    • Compatible Modules: HIMA H41q, H51q series I/O modules (CPU modules not supported)
    • Expansion Connection: Connected to the central rack via a dedicated parallel expansion cable
    • Expansion Distance: Limited cable length (usually within the meter range)
    • Power Input: Connected via a local power module (e.g., HIMA K9202A)
    • Power Distribution: Power distributed to 8 local slot modules via the backplane
    • Connection Method: Rear terminal blocks for power supply and system grounding
    • Installation Method: Panel mounting or DIN rail mounting
    • Operating Temperature: -20°C to +60°C

    Structure and Composition

The mechanical and electrical structure of the HIMA H7018 expansion rack is highly similar to that of the central rack (e.g., H7015A). It also adopts a robust metal frame structure to provide mechanical protection and electromagnetic shielding. The front side of the rack features 8 standardized slots, each with a high-reliability gold-plated connector at the rear. The multi-layer PCB inside the rack integrates a data bus and a power distribution busbar.

The key difference from the central rack is that HIMA H7018 does not have a dedicated slot for installing a CPU module. Instead, it is equipped with one or more high-speed parallel expansion interfaces (typically multi-pin circular or rectangular connectors) on the rear or side of the rack. These interfaces are used to connect to the corresponding interfaces on the central rack via shielded cables. The rear of the rack is also equipped with large screw terminal blocks for connecting the DC power input from the local power module and the system protective earth (PE) wire, ensuring that the modules on the expansion rack receive independent and stable power supply.

    Application Fields

The HIMA H7018 expansion rack is specifically designed for large-scale process industry projects that require large-scale safety interlocking.

    • In large-scale oil refining and petrochemical integrated plants, it is widely used to expand a large number of ESD input/output points (such as valve tags, pressure switches, and flame detectors) into multiple racks, achieving plant-wide safety coverage.
    • In natural gas processing plants and long-distance pipeline stations, it is used to expand the capacity of SIS, monitoring the status of hundreds of emergency shutdown valves (ESDV) and pressure safety valves (PSV).
    • In large-scale chemical bases and pharmaceutical factories, HIMA H7018 helps build large-scale safety systems covering multiple process units, enabling centralized management and decentralized control.

Any application that uses the H41q/H51q system and has I/O points exceeding the capacity of a single central rack is a typical application field for HIMA H7018.

    Installation and Maintenance

    Pre-Installation Preparation

    1. Before installing the HIMA H7018 expansion rack, plan the relative position between the expansion rack and the central rack, as well as the routing path of the expansion cable.
    2. Confirm that the installation location has sufficient space and load-bearing capacity.
    3. Prepare the dedicated expansion cable and appropriate power cables.
    4. Ensure that all installation operations are performed when the system is completely powered off.

    Maintenance Recommendations

    1. Regularly check whether the expansion rack is securely fixed.
    2. Focus on checking whether the connectors of the expansion cable are locked and free from physical damage, and whether the cable itself is worn—this is crucial for ensuring the reliability of the expansion link.
    3. Regularly check whether the local power terminals and grounding terminals are tightened.
    4. For cleaning, use a soft brush to remove dust, and avoid disturbing cable connections.
    5. If the communication of the modules on the expansion rack is interrupted, first check the connection and continuity of the expansion cable.
    6. All maintenance operations must be performed after the system is powered off.
