The ProSoft MVI56E-SIE is an industrial Ethernet client communication module designed to be installed on the backplane of ControlLogix controllers. Its core function enables the ControlLogix controller to act as an Ethernet client, facilitating seamless connections to up to 20 PLCs including models such as S7-200, S7-300, S7-400, S7-1200, as well as S7-1500 PLCs operating in server mode.

The module supports a communication rate of 10/100 Mbps with Auto MDI-X functionality, eliminating the need for additional crossover cables. It allows connections to a maximum of 20 PLCs, and features an internal storage capacity of approximately 5,000 16-bit registers that support user-defined mapping for storing I/O data. It comes equipped with a standard RJ45 Ethernet interface and is powered via the 1756 ControlLogix backplane, drawing around 800 mA of current.

ProSoft Configuration Builder (PCB) serves as a graphical configuration tool for Windows environments, enabling users to complete network settings and data mapping configurations without writing any code. The CIPconnect function supports network configuration and diagnostics through ControlLogix 1756-ENxT or 1756-CNB Ethernet modules, streamlining on-site commissioning processes. For quick replacement, the module has a built-in Compact Flash (CF) card that stores configuration information, meaning that swapping the CF card is all it takes to restore operations rapidly when replacing the module on-site. A 4-character scrolling LED display is included to show real-time communication status, fault codes and alarm messages, making it easy to identify and resolve issues promptly. The module also offers high flexibility with support for user-defined register mapping of up to 5,000 registers, catering to diverse industrial automation requirements.
Structure and Components
The main control unit is responsible for processing Ethernet protocols and communication tasks. The Ethernet interface, in the form of an RJ45 port, is used to connect to the Ethernet port of PLCs. There is a CF card slot dedicated to storing the module’s network configurations and parameter settings. The LED display panel provides real-time visibility of the module’s status and error information.

Installation and Maintenance
For installation, first turn off the system power to ensure safety, then insert the MVI56E-SIE module into an empty slot on the ControlLogix controller backplane. Connect the module to the industrial Ethernet port of the Siemens PLC using either a crossover or straight-through cable, as the module supports automatic crossover detection. Finally, verify that the LED display on the module operates normally, which typically shows a status such as “Init” during startup.
When it comes to configuration and maintenance, users can utilize the ProSoft Configuration Builder software to set the module’s IP address, configure network parameters and establish I/O mappings. Diagnostic monitoring can be performed in real time via the module’s LED display or the CIPconnect tool, allowing for quick troubleshooting of network communication faults. For backup and recovery, module parameters are stored on the CF card, so replacing the CF card is sufficient to restore configurations when swapping the module on-site, significantly simplifying maintenance work.
