    GE PCI-5565

The GE PCI‑5565 is a high-speed Fiber Optic Reflective Memory Card launched by General Electric (GE), and it belongs to the RFM‑5565 series. It enables real-time and deterministic shared memory among multiple computers via a fiber optic network, making it suitable for industrial, aerospace, scientific research and other scenarios that have extremely high requirements for latency and synchronization. The product is compatible with a variety of bus platforms (including PCI, CPCI, VME, PMC, etc.), supports operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and VxWorks, and allows software-based node number setting, eliminating the need for traditional jumper or DIP switch configuration.

    Main Technical Specifications

    • On-board Memory: 128 MByte (256 MByte optional) with verification function
    • Fiber Optic Rate: 2.125 Gbps (baud rate: 2.12 G)
    • Transmission Rate: Up to 170 MByte/s, 174 MB/s continuously
    • Data Packet Length: 4 ~ 64 Byte, automatically adjustable
    • Number of Nodes: Up to 256 nodes, supporting ring, star and redundant topologies
    • Transmission Distance: 300 m for multi-mode fiber, 10 km for single-mode fiber
    • Latency: 0.4 µs (approximately 400 ns) between nodes
    • Power Supply: 24 V DC (5 V for some models)
    • I/O Interface: PCI Express x1/x4, compatible with 3.3 V/5 V bus voltage
    • Operating Temperature: -10 ℃ ~ +65 ℃, Storage Temperature: -40 ℃ ~ +85 ℃

    Product Features

    • Extremely Low Latency: Nanosecond-level latency meets the needs of applications extremely sensitive to timeliness, such as real-time control and high-frequency trading.
    • CPU-Free Participation: Data is directly copied between the on-board memories of each node in the fiber optic network, and the host processor does not participate in the transmission, reducing the system load.
    • High Reliability: Supports redundant transmission mode, error detection and correction, dual DMA channels and interrupt function to ensure data integrity and system availability.
    • Flexible Topology: Can form ring, star or hybrid networks, supporting large-scale expansion of 256 nodes.
    • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Compatible with various buses such as PCI, CPCI, VME, PMC, and PC104, adapting to a variety of industrial controllers and embedded systems.
    • Easy Configuration: Node numbers are set through software, supporting plug-and-play, and eliminating the need for hardware jumper or DIP switch settings.

    Structure and Composition

    • Fiber Optic Transceiver Module: Responsible for the transmission and reception of optical signals and the management of fiber optic links.
    • On-board SDRAM (128 MByte): Used to store local and remote shared data.
    • PCI/PCIe Interface Circuit: Enables high-speed bus communication with the host.
    • DMA Controller: Provides high-speed and low-overhead data transfer.
    • Interrupt Control Unit: Supports real-time interrupt broadcasting to achieve synchronous updates.
    • Power Management Module: Accepts 24 V (or 5 V) DC power supply and provides voltage stabilization.
    • Configuration/Diagnostic Chip: Used for software-based node number setting, status monitoring, and remote diagnosis.

    Typical Application Fields

    • Aerospace: Real-time sharing of aircraft status parameters and data synchronization of flight control systems.
    • Industrial Automation: High-speed data exchange in production lines, real-time process control, and robot collaboration.
    • High-Frequency Trading and Finance: Low-latency data distribution and market quotation synchronization.
    • Scientific Research Experiments: Multi-site data synchronization of large-scale experimental devices (such as particle accelerators).
    • Military Simulation: Real-time distributed simulation platforms and command and control systems.
    • Intelligent Manufacturing: Real-time data mirroring of workshop equipment and quality monitoring.

    Installation and Maintenance Points

    Hardware Installation

    1. Insert the PCI‑5565 card into a PCIe x1/x4 slot that meets the specifications, and ensure that the screws on the back of the card are fixed to prevent loosening due to vibration.
    2. When connecting the fiber optic link, first confirm that the fiber type (single-mode/multi-mode) matches the corresponding transceiver module, and use fiber jumpers that comply with the IEC‑61754 standard.
    3. Connect the 24 V (or 5 V) power supply and check whether the power indicator light is normal.

    Software Configuration

    1. Install the driver program and SDK provided by GE (supporting Windows, Linux, and VxWorks).
    2. Set the node ID (0-255) through the configuration tool, which can be completed in the GUI or command line.
    3. Configure the network topology (ring/star) and redundant mode, and restart the card to make the configuration take effect after saving.

    Debugging and Verification

    1. Use the diagnostic tool provided by GE to check key indicators such as fiber optic link status, bandwidth utilization, and latency.
    2. Confirm that the on-board memory and remote nodes are synchronized normally through DMA read-write tests.
    3. Conduct stress tests before actual application to verify the reliability under the maximum number of nodes and the longest fiber distance.

    Daily Maintenance

    1. Regularly check the cleanliness of fiber optic connectors and card slots to prevent optical signal attenuation caused by dust.
    2. Monitor the card temperature to ensure that the working environment is within the specified range; install heat sinks or fans if necessary.
    3. Firmware Upgrade: GE regularly releases firmware with performance optimizations and security patches. It is recommended to perform the upgrade during the shutdown window.
    4. In case of failure, first use the diagnostic tool to obtain the error code, then contact GE technical support and provide the card serial number and error log.
