GE PCIe-5565
The GE PCIE-5565 is part of GE’s Reflective Memory product family. It is a fiber optic network card designed for high-speed, low-latency real-time data sharing. Through bus interfaces such as PCI-Express, CPCI, and PCI, it directly maps on-board SDRAM to network shared memory. All nodes synchronize data at the millisecond or even microsecond level, making it suitable for scenarios with extremely high requirements for determinism and real-time performance, such as industrial control, aerospace, military industry, and scientific research.
Key Technical Specifications
- Interface: PCIe x4 (PCI, CPCI, PXI versions also available)
- On-board Memory: 128 MB / 256 MB SDRAM (optional)
- Fiber Optic Rate: 2.125 Gb/s (single-mode/multi-mode)
- Transmission Distance: Up to 10 km for single-mode fiber, approximately 300 m for multi-mode fiber
- Node Capacity: Up to 256 nodes, supporting ring or star topology
- Packet Size: 4 ~ 64 bytes, automatically adjustable
- Transmission Rate: Approximately 174 MB/s, actual throughput depends on fiber type
- Latency: Approximately 0.4 µs, with hardware interrupt broadcasting function
- Operating Temperature: -40 °C ~ +85 °C (for some models)
- Power Supply: 3.3 V / 5 V, power consumption approximately 3 ~ 5 W
Product Features
- Ultra-low Latency and High Bandwidth: Hardware DMA directly writes to shared memory, with minimal CPU involvement, achieving a deterministic latency of approximately 0.4 µs.
- Flexible Topology: Supports ring, star, and hybrid structures, and can automatically reconfigure the network in case of a single-point failure.
- High Reliability: Redundant transmission mode, CRC verification, on-board self-test, and status indicators meet the requirements of industrial-grade 24/7 operation.
- Multi-platform Compatibility: Drivers and APIs support operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and VxWorks. Node numbers can be configured via software without manual dialing.
- Easy Installation: Standard PCIe card size, which can be directly inserted into servers or industrial PCs. The optical module supports hot-swapping, and the supporting software provides a graphical configuration interface.
Structure and Composition
- Main Control Board: PCIe interface chip (e.g., Marvell 88SS1093) is responsible for bus communication and DMA.
- Fiber Optic Transceiver Module: Supports single-mode/multi-mode fiber and provides a rate of 2.125 Gb/s.
- On-board SDRAM: 128 MB or 256 MB, used as shared memory.
- Power Management: Low-power design with overcurrent and over-temperature protection.
- Interface Expansion: Some models provide additional digital/analog I/O, PCI-PIO windows, etc.
Typical Application Fields
- Aerospace: Real-time sharing of aircraft status parameters to ensure mission safety.
- Industrial Automation: High-speed data exchange between production line equipment to achieve synchronous control and quality monitoring.
- High-Frequency Trading / Financial Real-Time Computing: Trading systems extremely sensitive to millisecond-level latency.
- Scientific Research Experiments: Multi-node data synchronization for large-scale experimental devices (e.g., particle accelerators).
- Military and National Defense: High-reliability real-time networks to meet the needs of extreme environments.
Installation and Maintenance Guidelines
Hardware Installation
- Insert the card into a compliant PCIe slot, ensuring the back of the card is aligned with the chassis backplane.
- Connect the fiber optic module, select single-mode or multi-mode fiber according to requirements, and confirm that the fiber length is within the specified range.
- After powering on, check if the indicators on the card (power, fiber optic, communication) are functioning normally.
Software Configuration
- Install the driver program and RFM (Reflective Memory) configuration tool provided by GE.
- Set the node ID in the software (via GUI or command line) and select the network topology (ring/star).
- Configure the shared memory size, packet size, and interrupt priority.
Debugging and Verification
- Use the provided test program (e.g., RFM2G) to perform loop tests and confirm data consistency between all nodes.
- Check if the latency and throughput meet the design indicators. Adjust the fiber type or packet size if necessary.
Daily Maintenance
- Regularly check the fiber optic connections and indicators on the card to ensure no looseness or abnormalities.
- In high-temperature or humid environments, maintain chassis ventilation to prevent poor heat dissipation.
- In case of failure, refer to the maintenance chapter to obtain the RMA number and contact GE technical support.
